Urgent Care

Urgent Care is now offered every Monday through Friday evening from 5-9 p.m. and Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Patients may enter through the main entrance of the hospital and ask for urgent care. A registered nurse will assess each patient and decide if you meet criteria for urgent care. Urgent care is first come, first serve with emergency patients taking precedence.

Inpatient Services

The Veterans Memorial Hospital inpatient nursing staff is comprised of educated, trained, and experienced professional nurses. We provide the best patient care possible by assessing patient needs, establishing a plan of care, and collaborating with medical staff, dietitians, pharmacists, respiratory, physical, occupational, and speech therapists, to help make each patient’s stay as comfortable as possible.

Skilled Care Services

Skilled Care is a level of care for patients who have had an inpatient hospital stay, either VMH or at another facility, and are still recovering from an illness, surgery or accident and are not quite ready to go home.  Skilled Rehabitilation includes Physical and Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Skilled Nursing Care, IV Antibiotics, and Respiratory Therapy

Outpatient Therapy Services

If you find yourself dealing with acute or chronic medical diagnosis, we provide a caring and comfortable environment for outpatient therapy services here at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon.
Outpatient Therapy Services include
 IV Antibiotics, IV Fluid Therapy including hydration, Blood Product Infusions, Therapy Port-a-Cath/PICC line cares such as flushing and dressing changes, Wound Dressing Cares and Changes

Emergency Services

In emergencies, seconds count. Twenty-four hour emergency services are provided at Veterans Memorial Hospital by registered nurses and on-call physicians.

Cardiac Rehabilitation

Phase II Cardiac Rehabilitation is designed for outpatients who travel to the hospital three times per week for a one-hour session of closely supervised physical rehabilitation.

Community & Home Care

Veterans Memorial Hospital Community and Home Care offers adults the assistance they need to remain living independently, in their own homes, as long as possible. 

Diabetes Education

The Allamakee Diabetes Self-Management Education Program is committed to providing people with Type 1, Type 2, and Gestational Diabetes with education in self-management skills needed to manage the disease and decrease the risks for long-term complications.

General Surgery

General surgeons and surgery staff are available 24 hours a day for emergency surgeries. General surgeons also hold regular hours at VMH for a variety of elective surgeries including colonoscopy, appendectomy, laparoscopic gall bladder, hernia repair, gastroscopy, arthroscopy, bunionectomy, cataract surgery, and C-Sections just to name a few.


Immunizations are given every Wednesday at VMH Community and Home Care. The 1st and 3rd Wednesdays hours are 1pm – 6pm. All other Wednesdays are 1pm – 4pm. No appointment is needed during clinic hours. NO DOCTORS ORDERS NEEDED.  Must be accompanied by a Parent. Medicaid Accepted. 

Laboratory Services

Laboratory services are provided 24 hours a day by our licensed staff, averaging over 50,000 procedures a year. Anyone who has orders to have any type of laboratory test performed can have that test at our Lab, even if it was ordered by a physician from out of town.

Massage Therapy

Some of the benefits of massage include increasing circulation, relaxing muscles, easing aches and pains, and reducing stress. Certified massage therapists are available for 1/2 hour, one hour, and one and 1/2 hour massages.

Maternity Services

Veterans Memorial Hospital now has three equally, roomy family suites in the hospital’s Maternity Services Department available for parents to enjoy their new baby, as well as offer more comfort for all the relatives and friends who come to visit.

Occupational Therapy

The role of Occupational therapists at VMH is to help people regain function following injuries and illnesses.  We treat people who have hip or knee replacement surgery, heart attacks, pneumonia, strokes, diabetes, generalized weakness, skin burns and joint contractures, breathing difficulties, and many other diagnoses.  

Physical Therapy

The Rehabilitation staff at VMH works with people of all ages, helping them to reduce pain and regain strength, independence and health. Individual Physical Therapy services provided include athletic training, home health, work hardening/conditioning, wellness programs, and wound care.

Radiology Services

Radiology services continue to expand at Veterans Memorial Hospital. Specialized radiology services include: mammography, bone densitometry, C.T, nuclear medicine MRI and we now offer 4D Ultrasound. X-rays are read 24 hours a day, 7 days a week via teleradiology.

Respiratory Therapy

The Respiratory therapy department provides support and various treatments for patients diagnosed with: pneumonia, asthma, bronchitis, COPD, influenza and other respiratory related diseases. 

Same Day Surgery Services

The Same Day Surgery Suite is used for surgery patients who will be released to go home yet that same day following their procedure. The Suite is well utilized five days a week most commonly for laparoscopic surgeries, colonoscopies, hernia repairs and many orthopedic procedures.

Speech Therapy

The Speech Therapy department provides a variety of diagnostic, treatment, and educational services to inpatients and outpatients of all ages.  Speech therapy services target speech/ language delays, adult swallowing disorders, video swallow studies, speech and swallowing disorders associated with strokes and/or neurological diseases.

Respite Services

Respite care provides short-term, temporary relief for those who are caring for loved ones. It is especially helpful when you may need to leave town and need a safe, compassionate place to care for your loved one.
